UNRE Popondetta security chief Bernard Aliel (right) and two of his men with the new radios.SECURITY at the Popondetta Campus of the University of Natural Resource & Environment (UNRE) has been strengthened with ten new two-way radios.

Officer in charge of the security section, Bernard Aliel, took receipt of the walkie-talkies from the University’s main campus in East New Britain late last month.

Without a campus security vehicle, the radios make communication between on-duty supervisors and location-based security officers more efficient; and make it easier to monitor and safeguard the campus.

While thanking UNRE Vudal for the radios, Mr Aliel said the vehicle promised by Ijivitari MP David Orere at the opening of the campus’ new security office last year never arrived; hence his section was grateful of the assistance, especially with the constant security problems facing the campus.

He said there is a still a need for new uniforms; and more men power. Currently, he has 28 guards and needs another eight officers.

Mr Aliel called on the people of Oro including provincial authorities and political leaders, to have pride in having a University situated in their province and take care of the national asset.

Meanwhile, UNRE Vice Chancellor Professor Philip Siaguru has announced that a new Mazda BT50 double-cab vehicle has been purchased for UNRE Popondetta.

The vehicle will replace the current administration ten-seater, which will be transferred to the security section because it s a heavier and more robust vehicle for rough terrain.

The new radios and vehicle were purchased from the University’s limited internal funds after unsuccessful attempts to secure funds externally to address security concerns at the Popondetta campus.
